ControlLogix 1756 — the Rockwell Logix5000 chassis platform
ControlLogix is the upper-tier member of the Rockwell Logix5000 family. Where CompactLogix uses a fixed-chassis form factor for mid-range machine control, ControlLogix uses a modular 1756 chassis (4, 7, 10, 13, or 17 slots) with user-selectable processor, I/O, communications, motion, and safety modules. It is the platform Rockwell positions for process industries, safety-critical applications, and systems requiring modular expansion or hot-standby redundancy.
Processor selection — 1756-L7x, L8x, L8xSP
L7x processors (1756-L71, L72, L73, L74, L75) cover general-purpose duty with varying memory and I/O point counts. L8x processors (1756-L81E through L85E) are the current generation — dual-core, embedded EtherNet/IP, and higher memory ceilings. L8xSP / L7xSP variants add SIL-3 certified safety task execution for GuardLogix applications.
1756 I/O, communications, and motion modules
The 1756 chassis accepts a wide catalogue of I/O modules — standard digital and analog, high-speed counter, RTD, thermocouple, isolated analog, and safety-rated. Communications modules include 1756-ENxT (EtherNet/IP), 1756-CNB (ControlNet), 1756-DNB (DeviceNet), and 1756-DHRIO (DH+ / RIO for legacy migration). Motion modules include 1756-L7xSXT (SERCOS) and 1756-M02/M08/M16 Integrated Motion modules.
Hot-standby redundancy
ControlLogix supports 1756-RM2 and 1756-RMC1 redundancy modules for primary/secondary chassis pairs with bumpless transfer — common in water utilities, mining, and refining applications where a PLC failure cannot stop the process. EtherNet/IP redundancy via Device-Level Ring (DLR) is supported on newer processor generations.
Migration from PLC-5, SLC-500, and PLC-3
ControlLogix is Rockwell’s recommended migration path from PLC-5 (1785), SLC-500 (1747), and legacy PLC-3 (1775) platforms. Conversion tools in Studio 5000 import PLC-5 ladder logic directly, and 1756-DHRIO modules provide native DH+ / RIO connectivity so legacy remote I/O chassis can remain in service during a staged migration.
Parallel import and Australian warranty
Genuine Rockwell ControlLogix sourced through authorised international distributors with full manufacturer warranty. Part numbers, firmware, Studio 5000 compatibility, and AOPs are identical to the Rockwell AU channel.
