How to specify an industrial conductivity sensor
The right conductivity sensor depends on five process variables: conductivity range (low-conductivity DI water through high-range brine), operating temperature, fluid chemistry (clean process water vs aggressive chemistry vs sanitary CIP), process connection (thread, tri-clamp, flange, M12), and the controller it has to talk to. Get those five right and the rest follows.
2-electrode vs 4-electrode — which to choose
2-electrode sensors cover the bulk of industrial conductivity duty up to about 100 mS/cm — process water, cooling tower monitoring, neutralisation pH/EC loops, and sanitary CIP rinse-water verification. They are simpler, cheaper, and fully adequate when the conductivity range is moderate.
4-electrode sensors handle high-range conductivity (above ~50 mS/cm) without the polarisation errors that hit 2-electrode designs at high concentrations. Specify 4-electrode for brine streams, plating bath monitoring, ion-exchange regenerant solutions, and CIP cleaning chemistry where the conductivity exceeds the 2-electrode range. The 4-electrode design also reduces drift in fouling streams.
M12 digital — the open-protocol Memosens alternative
The IDC-M12-SS and IDC-M12-PEEK sensors output RS485 Modbus directly from the sensor head — no separate transmitter required. This is the open-protocol equivalent of Endress+Hauser’s Memosens architecture, but without the proprietary head, the proprietary cable, or the dependency on E+H Liquiline transmitters. Plug them straight into any Modbus master — Allen-Bradley CompactLogix, Siemens S7-1200, Schneider Modicon, or any third-party PLC or gateway.
Sanitary CIP and tri-clamp variants
The IDC-2W-SAN is the 3A-compatible tri-clamp variant for food, beverage, dairy, and pharma upstream applications. CIP-rated to 110 °C continuous duty. Direct connection to standard 1.5″ or 2″ tri-clamp fittings — no special adaptors required.
Calibration and maintenance
Conductivity calibration uses a single point in a known-conductivity solution (1413 µS/cm KCl is the standard reference for low range, 12.88 mS/cm for mid range). Recommended calibration interval is monthly for general process duty, weekly for CIP/sanitary applications. M12 digital sensors store calibration history on-board.
Australian compliance
Sensors used in drinking-water service align with AS/NZS 4020:2018 (products in contact with drinking water). Sensors in wastewater discharge monitoring meet state-EPA reporting requirements when paired with a calibrated transmitter and documented calibration log.
