How to specify an industrial pH sensor
The right pH sensor depends on five process variables: operating temperature, operating pressure, process fluid chemistry, process connection (thread, tri-clamp, flange), and the controller it has to talk to. Get those five right and the rest follows. The notes below walk through each application family and the trade-offs that decide selection.
Standard process pH — 100T, 100P, 200T, 300T, J201
For general industrial process duty up to 100 °C and 10 bar — water and wastewater monitoring, neutralisation tanks, cooling-tower pH control, plating-bath monitoring — the standard process electrodes cover the bulk of installations. The IDH-100T is the 12 mm compact body for tight panels; 200T extends to a longer 12 mm body for greater immersion depth; 300T moves to 316 stainless trim for better mechanical durability; J201 is the industrial standard at 130 °C and 10 bar. The IDH-100P is the digital RS485 Modbus version of the 100T — same body, same sensing, but with a built-in transmitter and digital output. Specify the digital variant when you want to skip the analog transmitter and connect directly into a PLC over Modbus.
CIP and sanitary — 320T, 350T
Food and beverage, dairy, brewing, and pharma upstream applications need an electrode that survives clean-in-place cycles (typically 70–85 °C caustic NaOH followed by acid rinse) and sterilisation (steam at 121–134 °C in some pharma). The IDH-320T is rated for 110 °C continuous duty with 3A-compatible tri-clamp construction — the bulk-volume F&B choice. The IDH-350T is the premium long-life variant with a triple-junction reference for extended electrode life in tough cleaning regimes.
Aggressive chemistry & pharma — 500T, J202-HF, J203-CF
For chemistry that attacks glass or fouls reference junctions: the IDH-500T uses a PEEK body for aggressive solvents, hot acids, and pharma WFI duty (130 °C). The J202-HF is purpose-built for hydrofluoric acid streams in semiconductor and metal-finishing — HF eats standard glass electrodes in days, the J202-HF runs them for months. The J203-CF (Corrosion / Fouling-proof) handles streams with high suspended solids, slurries, and biological growth that clog conventional reference junctions.
Specialty process conditions — J605-HP, J301-CR, J204-V
The J605-HP is rated to 13 bar and 130 °C for high-pressure alkali service — Bayer aluminium refining, mining alkali leach circuits, and high-pressure boiler-water sampling. The J301-CR handles cryogenic and refrigerated process lines down to −20 °C, where standard electrodes freeze the reference junction. The J204-V is the anti-clogging design for viscous and high-solids streams — fermentation slurries, paper-mill black liquor, and food-processing waste — using a flow-through reference design that resists fouling.
Digital RS485 vs analog mV — which to choose
Analog mV sensors output a Nernstian signal (±59 mV per pH unit at 25 °C) that requires a pH transmitter to convert into 4–20 mA or RS485 — the transmitter handles temperature compensation, calibration, and isolation. Digital sensors like the IDH-100P contain the transmitter inside the sensor head and output RS485 Modbus directly — fewer wiring junctions, lower noise, and direct PLC integration without a separate transmitter. Specify analog when you already have a pH controller in the panel; specify digital when starting from scratch or replacing a Memosens-locked installation.
Calibration and maintenance
Standard 2-point calibration uses pH 4.01 and pH 7.00 buffers (or pH 7.00 and pH 10.01 for alkaline streams). Recommended calibration interval is monthly for general process duty, weekly for CIP/sanitary applications, and after every cleaning cycle for high-solids or fouling streams. All InstroDirect digital sensors store calibration history on-board; analog sensors rely on the transmitter for storage.
Australian compliance
Sensors used in drinking-water service align with AS/NZS 4020:2018 (products in contact with drinking water). Sensors specified for state-EPA reporting on wastewater discharge meet the relevant NSW EPA, QLD DES, VIC EPA, SA EPA, and WA DWER reporting requirements when paired with a calibrated transmitter and documented calibration log.
