Choosing between Micro820, 830, 850, and 870
The Micro 800 family scales from nano-sized standalone controllers (Micro820) through connected-machine controllers (Micro870) in a single programming environment. Selection depends on I/O count, communications needs, and whether the machine connects into a larger EtherNet/IP architecture.
Micro820 — simple remote-monitored machines
20 total I/O points, embedded Ethernet for remote monitoring and data logging, suitable for small standalone machines, HVAC controllers, and lighting panels. Programmed in CCW Standard.
Micro830 — standalone machine control
10 to 48 I/O, USB programming, 2080-series plug-in modules for extra I/O or comms (RS232/RS485, analog). No native Ethernet — use serial-to-Ethernet gateway if remote visualisation is required.
Micro850 — connected machines
EtherNet/IP native with CIP Safety over EtherNet/IP in newer firmware. Up to 132 I/O with 2085 expansion modules. Typical use cases: packaging machines, conveyor control, small water/wastewater pumping stations.
Micro870 — higher-end machine control
Up to 304 I/O, IO-Link master support, EtherNet/IP with embedded webserver, and suitable for machines that need to coordinate with CompactLogix or ControlLogix via Produced/Consumed tags.
Programming with Connected Components Workbench
CCW Standard is free (Rockwell download, no licence cost). CCW Developer Edition adds structured text editor, motion function blocks, and extended simulation — required for Micro850/870 motion applications. Both editions run on Windows 10 and 11, support ladder logic, structured text, and function block programming per IEC 61131-3.
Expansion and plug-ins — 2080 and 2085 ranges
2080-series plug-in modules fit in the Micro 820/830/850/870 controller slots and add: analog I/O (2080-IF2, IF4, OF2), high-speed counters (2080-MOT-HSC), serial communications (2080-SERIALISOL), memory backup (2080-MEMBAK-RTC), real-time clock, and IO-Link master (2080-4IOL). 2085-series expansion modules clip to the right of Micro850/870 controllers on the DIN rail for additional digital and analog I/O.
