SINAMICS G120 — modular drive architecture
The SINAMICS G120 is built around a Power Module + Control Unit concept: select the Power Module by kW rating (PM240-2 covers 0.37 kW through 250 kW with integrated braking chopper), then pair it with a Control Unit based on the required functionality. This makes the G120 uniquely easy to service — when a CU fails, the PM stays on the rail; when a PM fails, the CU and its parameters migrate onto a replacement PM unchanged.
Control Unit selection — CU240E, CU230P, CU250S
CU240E-2 variants are the standard machine-duty Control Units, with PN (PROFINET), DP (PROFIBUS), or F (Safety-integrated) options. CU230P-2 adds process-specific function blocks (cascade control, sleep/wake, hibernate, multi-pump) for water, wastewater, and HVAC duty. CU250S-2 is the highest-performance variant with SIMOTION-like positioning and synchronism.
Integration with SIMATIC S7 PLCs
Every SINAMICS G120 appears in TIA Portal V17+ via the Drive Objects mechanism. Technology objects (TO_SpeedAxis, TO_PositioningAxis) map drive parameters into native S7 PLC tags — no manual telegram configuration. StartDrive adds inline drive commissioning inside the PLC project.
Safety Integrated — STO, SS1, SLS
Safety-integrated Control Units (CU240E-2 PN-F, CU240E-2 DP-F) include Safe Torque Off (STO), Safe Stop 1 (SS1), Safely-Limited Speed (SLS), and Safe Brake Control (SBC) certified to SIL-2 per IEC 61508 and PLd per ISO 13849. Safety wiring integrates directly with S7-1500 F-CPUs via PROFIsafe over PROFINET.
