Product details

Reagent-Free COD Monitoring — Continuous, Real-Time, Chemical-Free

The COD ID BLACK UV is an advanced online COD analyser that eliminates the need for reagents, sample digestion, and laboratory analysis. Using UV photometric absorption at 254 nm with a 2 mm optical path length, the probe delivers continuous COD, UV254, turbidity (TSS), and temperature measurements in under 10 seconds — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Unlike traditional COD digestion methods that require mercury, silver sulphate, and potassium dichromate, the COD ID BLACK UV operates entirely without reagents. This eliminates hazardous chemical handling, reduces WHS obligations, and removes the cost of consumables, lab technician time, and chemical waste disposal — delivering a dramatically lower total cost of ownership over the life of the instrument.

How UV Optical COD Measurement Works

The probe emits UV light at 254 nm through a 2 mm optical path directly into the sample stream. Organic compounds absorb UV radiation in proportion to their concentration — this relationship, combined with a simultaneous turbidity correction, allows the sensor to calculate COD, UV254 absorbance, and TSS in real time without any sample preparation or chemical addition. The stainless steel probe is IP68-rated for direct immersion, requiring no bypass plumbing or flow cell.

Applications

Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP)

  • Continuous influent and final effluent COD monitoring for EPA compliance reporting
  • Real-time process control for activated sludge and biological treatment systems
  • Trade waste discharge acceptance screening and load monitoring
  • Stormwater and wet weather event monitoring at STP bypass points
  • Energy optimisation — aeration control based on real-time organic load

Dairy and Food Processing

  • Continuous trade waste COD monitoring at discharge to sewer
  • CIP (clean-in-place) cycle end-point detection and verification
  • Whey, milk wash, and process effluent load monitoring
  • Pre-treatment optimisation for dissolved air flotation (DAF) and anaerobic systems
  • Automated chemical dosing control based on real-time effluent COD load

Industrial & Municipal Applications

  • Abattoir, beverage, and meat processing trade waste monitoring
  • Council and water utility discharge compliance monitoring
  • River and catchment water quality surveillance
  • Industrial pretreatment system performance verification

Why Choose the COD ID BLACK UV?

  • No reagents, ever — Eliminate ongoing chemical purchase, storage, handling, and disposal costs permanently.
  • Continuous real-time data — 10-second response time enables genuine process control, not just periodic sampling.
  • IP68 direct-immersion design — No flow cell, no bypass plumbing. Mount directly in your channel, wet well, or tank.
  • Multi-parameter in one probe — COD, UV254, turbidity, and temperature from a single instrument reduces installation footprint and cost.
  • SCADA/PLC compatible — RS485 Modbus RTU output integrates with virtually any existing automation infrastructure.
  • Ultra-low power — Under 0.6 W at 12/24 VDC. Suitable for remote and solar-powered monitoring installations.
  • Minimal maintenance — 3-month calibration cycle only. No reagents to mix, no digestion blocks to clean.

Why InstroDirect vs Endress+Hauser or HACH in Australia

InstroDirect supplies the same grade of water-quality sensor that Australian councils, WWTP integrators, pharma plants, and food & beverage operators specify from Endress+Hauser and HACH — at a significantly lower landed cost and without vendor lock-in.

FactorInstroDirectEndress+Hauser / HACH
Digital protocolOpen RS485 Modbus RTU — integrates with Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, Beckhoff, or any SCADAProprietary (E+H Memosens / HACH SC digital) — locked to the vendor’s transmitter
Technical supportAustralian field engineers with 20+ years automation experienceRemote support via offshore ticket queues
On-site calibrationInstroDirect technicians available across QLD, NSW, VIC with formal calibration certificateThird-party authorised service network, longer turnaround
PriceParallel-import model — no distributor margin stack, typically 30–50% below equivalent brand pricingPremium brand pricing with tiered distributor markup
Replacement partsStandard consumables ordered on demand from InstroDirectProprietary cartridges and cells, tied to the brand

Moving away from Memosens or SC digital protocols frees you to mix and match sensors with any Modbus-capable transmitter or PLC. InstroDirect probes drop straight into an existing control system without a new proprietary transmitter.
